Wouldn't 'Let's go get smarter together' or 'today' or something of the likes be a bit more appropriate, due to it being an instance of becoming smarter rather than a culmination of instances at once? I feel like 'let's go get smarter every day' for one specific instance of becoming smarter is a bit misplaced and misnomed in comparison, and leads to a moment of awkwardness in my mind; as if it's advice, rather than a welcoming invitation. Maybe it's a solo perception, but here's to hoping this mention of insight can provide some benefit. Cheers, Destin.

What resin and orientation did you use to make the electrolysis thing?

Destin could probably pass a sub qual board by now...lol.

So... We should all make scrubbers and save the planet?
Eddie J. G.
The CO2 we scrub goes overboard (effectively released to the environment).
Jackson Mabon
Why not just put a bunch of little plants everywhere! (Just kidding)
Tim Schütze
that's a simple question, just plant some trees xD

Why don’t they use plant and live in a symbiotic environment ?
Eddie J. G.
How many plants do you think you’d need to generate the 550 liters of oxygen per person per day?
Kaiserland111
I already knew how they do it, but it was still very enjoyable watching Destin describe the process. Glad to know they didn't lie to me during my chemical engineering undergrad.

Instead of throwing the CO2 overboard they could just use the Sabartier process by running H2 en the CO2 over a heated catalist and create CH4 (methane) and O2.

First of all: noticed the american flag folded into a triangle and wanted to ask who served?
And second: love your videos!!

You were on the sub to work out the return trip speed of light weren't you. 😀
Krish Patel
Just wondering, what did the sub smell like?
Eddie J. G.
Submarines smell like a mix of deep fat fryer oil, motor oil and cat pee. No joke.
CaptianSSundee
Flat coke still has CO2 in it, but it has the same amount of CO2 as the atmosphere whereas the fizzy coke has an excess amount of dissolved CO2 and it needs to escape and equalise. This is why coke doesn’t fizz before the bottle is open.
And this is known as Henry’s law for anyone interested, it’s one of the gas laws.

A really good episode, Destin. Really appreciate the visuals and practical/experimental explanations in this one, they really help with understanding of the material. Thank you for your work!

Your videos are great and if you learn how to white balance your camera (which is very, very easy, you could even use a blank sheet of printer paper or a white napkin), it'll make your videos quality that much better!

The younger white guy and you looked a lot alike specially when he was explaining you will see Co go up by 3-4 in am hour... lol 😂

Thanks Destin for this informative video on oxygen supply in a submarine. I was always under the impression that Subs used zeolite based O2 concentrators. Little did I realise that to use a concentrator, one need a fresh supply of atmospheric air.

Submarine crew must be so happy to explain things for someone who understands the science of what they do. Very interesting~

How Do Nuclear Submarines Make Nitrogen? only Oxygen inside the Submarines will cause Oxygen burn is a light or fire spark , it must mix with Nitrogen
Eddie J. G.
We get the nitrogen in the boat as it’s just normal outside air before we shut the hatches. Then the nitrogen is relatively unconsumed.
Ahmad Abdul Manan
Highly talented guy with peak of curiosity 👍🏻

Did they let you in the engine room? Probably not to film but just as a tour?

I think they call them clinkers in reference to a blacksmithing term (it was probably used in many other industries, too)
It generally refers to un-burnable impurities that remain after whatever fuel you're burning has been spent. Like when you are blacksmithing and burning coke (purified coal), you get solid lumps of impurities that you need to remove.
Olak THE Polak
Just link the oxygen generator smh my head

Really cool! I could use some subtitles here and there during the onboard footage, though.

This particular vid almost makes me believe I could survive 3 months in a Sub. I said almost. Nice vids Destin. I'm a big fan. Regards from Nigeria.

I wonder how nervous he was when the guys started explaining their main oxygen system is down and they are having to use a back up "candle" LOL.

man... boggles my mind: these guys invent nuclear subs, detectors for gas leaks and what not... I was in coloardo snowboarding... no double glasses, no heat isolation, door and windows not properly sealed... outside temp -20 degrees :D, it somehow just does not add up ?! ^^
otoh: nice video, enjoyed it!

Why is lithium hydroxide not use in the exhausts of vehicles if it absorbes co2?
Faceless
Lithium Hydroxide filters are consumable unfortunately. They absorb the CO2 by reacting with it to produce lithium carbonate. Now it's obviously a bit more complex than that because why not just make them replaceable and keep it stored as lithium carbonate, for example... that's beyond anything I know but I would be interested in hearing it

Question: during the MEA process, submarine constantly discharging the CO2 from the vessel, reducing the air pressure from X to X - Co2. How do you balance the air pressure back to X? Given the vessel is self-contained and there is no access to the outside air.

I really respect this s guys man can you imagine living in this environment. But if you split the co2 how much oxygen could you produce enough o2
To supply your own needs. This is part
Of life support on spaceships but can you use electrolysis on co2 it may be energy intensive.

Interesting

The reason why they are called clinkers is because of the sound that is made when they cool down, same thing happens when you burn coal, you also get glass/silicate and ash as the byproduct with coal. My knowledge of this comes from working with a coal boiler in our house that used to be a part of a train engine, I would ask my dad questions about it all the time. It was used to heat a huge church house by the way, it was pretty good.

19:29 I was very interested in how he decides if there is a problem with the 02 not rising quickly enough, do they have a chart they refer too or is it intuitive? Would have liked to have heard more about that but it was an interesting video none-the-less.
